After saving the planet from aliens in INDEPENDENCE DAY, stomping all over New York City with GODZILLA, and forcing the President's staff into hysterics for WHITE HOUSE DOWN, director/screenwriter/producer Roland Emmerich is at it again with MOONFALL, a science fiction epic that now has Academy Award winner Halle Berry set to star.
Word of Berry signing on to lead the upcoming film was announced Tuesday afternoon, along with the details of her role. For the film, Berry will play a NASA astronaut-turned-administrator whose previous space mission holds a clue about an impending catastrophe. She will be joined in the cast by Josh Gad.
In MOONFALL, a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact, and against all odds, a ragtag team launches an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love and risking everything to land on the lunar surface and save our planet from annihilation.
Directed by Emmerich, MOONFALL begins production this fall in Montreal with a script written by Emmerich, his 2012 co-writer Harald Kloser, and Spenser Cohen. Emmerich is producing the independent feature film under his Centropolis Entertainment banner with Kloser producing through his company, Street Entertainment. Executive producers are Dennis Wang, James Wang, J.P. Pettinato, Marco Shepherd, Ute Emmerich, Carsten Lorenz, and Stuart Ford.
You guys, if the moon were to be knocked from its orbit, we'd all be properly effed. To begin, gravity would literally pull on the planet, causing tsunamis, earthquakes, and increased volcanic activity across the globe. While all of that's going on, you'd also have to contend with your fellow humans, who in a futile attempt to escape the catastrophe would likely commit unspeakable acts before Mother Nature comes to correct her biggest mistake. Ah well. If you've got to go, go with a smile, amiright?
