With GEARS OF WAR pretty much blowing everyone and everything away on the XBOX 360, HALO 3‘s title as a killer app may be in jeopardy. Fans of Bungie’s shooter will have a chance to see if HALO 3 can cut it when Microsoft stages an open beta test for the multiplayer portion of the game next spring, as announced today by the software giant.

As well, Microsoft divulged some PR stuff for the game, which is due out next year. For starters, on December 4, a single advertisement for the game will be shown during an airing of Monday Night Football on ESPN. No other info on the TV spot was given, other than it would “provide viewers with a unique and compelling look at Master Chief and the world of HALO 3.”

In addition, HALO 2 fans can expect a series of all-new multiplayer maps next spring to go along with HALO 3’s beta, though the maps will be available only to 360 owners. Lock and load!
