Fans of the HARRY POTTER book and film series no doubt have their favorite characters and through the years likely had an idea of who should end up dead, alive, or married. Early on in both mediums it seemed like both Harry (played by Daniel Radcliffe) and Hermoine (played by Emma Watson) were meant to be together. But, author J.K. Rowling intervened on herself and created the romance of Hermoine and Ron Weasley (played by Rupert Grint), which always felt just slightly off. One could see how Hermoine may be attracted to Ron to an extent, but as a couple destined for marriage and kids? It seemed unlikely, but in the end Ron and Hermoine tied the knot and popped out some kids, while Harry married Ron's sister, Ginny, and had some yard apes of his own with her. Now, the author has voiced that even she believes the relationship was forged in error, while being interviewed by Hermoine herself, Emma Watson, in the latest issue of Wonderland magazine.
“I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron. I know, I’m sorry. I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.”
Watson seemed in agreement, saying:
"I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy.”
Rowling went on to say that Hermoine and Ron would likely need "relationship therapy," which is pretty obvious just from the pair's volatile relationship on page and screen. Rowling is currently at work on screenplays for a new series of films based in the same wizarding world as the Potter series with "familiar characters." Will we ever see Harry, Ron, and Hermoine back on the big screen (or on the page), perhaps with a new twist to their final fate past the end of HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2? Personally, as someone who read all the books and saw all the films, I'd happily welcome an adult-themed continuation of the series with older characters, complete with couples therapy, daycare problems, and mid-life wizarding crisis meltdowns. That's just me, though.
