Hasbro’s Ouija movie not dead yet, but the budget’s being trimmed

Back in August we heard the news that Universal Pictures had dropped its adaptation of the board game OUIJA, which Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes was set to produce, with McG sitting in the director’s chair. The film’s budget got out of control (don’t they all?) and the studio didn’t need a crystal ball to tell it that OUIJA would have to make a friggin’ fortune to recoup its cost.

But OUIJA might still have life in it; according to an article in The Hollywood Reporter, Hasbro’s CEO Brian Goldner brought up the project in a conference call regarding the company’s third quarter earnings. Goldner says the film is not kaput, but the budget will have to be cut. (A similar situation to what Disney just went through with THE LONE RANGER.) Apparently the script is being polished now and it’s conceivable that OUIJA will be set up at a new studio before long.

In case you had forgotten, the movie was going to be more of an action-fantasy than a spooky story. Simon Kinberg and Evan Spiliotopoulos had contributed to the screenplay when the flick was with Universal, but it’s unclear whether their draft(s) are still being used.
