I’ve always wanted to see a “haunted road” story. It always seemed like such a fun, easy sell to me. I think the closest I ever got to one was REEKER (which I loved, though it wasn’t quite the “road” that was haunted). No matter, because I may be getting my spooked stretch of pavement yet! Writer/director Bill Bennett (right) is working on a new idea for a film that has a really nice ring to it. It’s called DRIVE BY NIGHT and here is how he sums up the plot:
“Something supernatural [happens] where you get onto this road and you can’t get off it, it’s trying to kill you. The road is the haunted house. You can do classic haunted house stuff you may have seen too many times but you put it on a road and it looks different and feels right.” Apparently the “haunted road” plot is stemming from this scenario: Traversing this mean stretch of blacktop located in Australia is a young couple who spend a night fighting for their lives.
It does sound similar to REEKER, but this is only a very basic synopsis. I’m certain that Mr. Bennett has plenty of original and fun ideas up his sleeve. I’ll be sure to keep checking my rear-view mirror for any further information regarding the development of DRIVE BY NIGHT.
