Joss Whedon is currently in attendance at the SXSW (South by Southwest) Film Festival to promote his loving-deconstruction-of-horror-movies CABIN IN THE WOODS, and is of course being asked questions left, right, and center about THE AVENGERS. The film’s plot has thus far managed to stay fairly shrouded in secrecy, but now some of that secrecy has been broken for good and for real.

There has been plenty of speculation in the months since THE AVENGERS started shooting as to just who it is that Loki has dragged along in his plot to (presumably) decimate Earth, with a large portion of attention being focused on the idea that Loki’s allies are an alien race called the Skrulls (despite the denial of Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige). Well Joss, you almost made it. But here we are, less than two months out from opening day, and the word directly from the man himself is:
“SXSW attendee French Toast tweeted ‘I’m at the Whedon panel – he just said who the bad guys aren’t for Avengers – then said ‘oh shouldn’t have said that.’ Kree and Skrulls… they aren’t the bad guys.'”

Perhaps you already guessed this a long time ago, perhaps you agree with Comicbook.com that Loki’s pals are actually Atlanteans, or perhaps you have your own wild theory that is now one step closer to the truth.
Whatever the case might be, May 4th is just around the corner. See you there.
