Hellraiser HBO Max series scripts haven’t been written yet

Eighteen months have gone by since it was announced that Halloween 2018 (watch it HERE) and Halloween Kills director David Gordon Green would be directing multiple episodes of a Hellraiser series for the HBO Max streaming service, with Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat) and Mark Verheiden (Ash vs. Evil Dead) on board to write the show. So even though we shared a quote from Green last week where he said the Hellraiser series was still “in just the early stages”, it’s shocking to hear how little it has progressed: in a new interview, Green told Entertainment Weekly that the scripts haven’t even been written yet.

Green said,

We’ve got it over at HBO, and that’s not in script form yet, but it’s being developed.”

This series “is by no means a remake, but rather assumes the past mythology to be a given.” The show has been described as “an elevated continuation of the existing Hellraiser mythology”.

The Hellraiser HBO Max show was announced the same month we heard that David Bruckner would be directing a feature reboot of the Hellraiser property, a movie that just wrapped production and will be released through the Hulu streaming service. These two projects have nothing to do with each other.

Green commented on the fact that there are two separate Hellraiser projects coming our way at the same time:

It’s going to be fascinating because it’s a different platform, different concept, different creators, but the same (property). I’m not sure where that ends up and how that goes, but I’m very curious. It is a fun cultural experiment, right? To think there’s a crew with a concept for a series [and] a crew with a concept for a movie taking the same mythology. I don’t know, does it become like Deep Impact and Armageddon?”

Franchise creator Clive Barker, who will gain control of the U.S. copyright to the original Hellraiser in December, serves as executive producer on both the HBO Max series and the Hulu film.

We’ll keep you updated on these Hellraisers as they continue to move forward.
