Columbia wants Ivan Reitman off Ghostbusters 3?!

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

You read that right folks. Apparently Columbia wants director Ivan Reitman off GHOSTBUSTERS 3! I call shenanigans!

NY Mag’s Vulture recently broke the news that the studio wants to go a ‘younger’ route with whomever directs GHOSTBUSTERS 3. Why exactly? Well considering the film is a ‘passing of the torch’ deal to a younger group of ‘Busters I suppose it’s understandable… especially with Reitman’s last film being 2006’s MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND. But we’re not going to talk about that.

Alright so it’s understandable why Columbia wants a young, hip director on the project… But let’s be serious here. Ivan Reitman is just as essential to GHOSTBUSTERS as Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramisand Ernie Hudson! That’s exactly why, minus Hudson, all those mentioned have a deal in their contract that says all any of them have to say is ‘No go’ and the project dies. Nice! Although on the other side of the fence Columbia can simply say ‘no go’ if Reitman doesn’t back down. What a pickle we’ve got ourselves here.

You see Reitman just signed up for FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS (previously F*CKBUDDIES), starring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman. So Columbia was hoping Reitman’s schedule would be too hecktic for GHOSTBUSTERS 3 but it seems Reitman is still aiming to do both flicks, if Columbia allows it of course. But how can they not? After all this hype how can the studio kill the proejct simply because they don’t want Reitman directing? That’s ridiculous! My advice? Stop all this ‘younger director’ talk and put all your marbles behind Reitman and company. GHOSTBUSTERS 3 is already insanely anticipated so run with it Columbia… Not rocket science here folks.

Or does Columbia actually have an argument? What do you guys think? Is Columbia in the right with doubting the 63 year old Reitman? Well the film’s latest script from writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky is due this May so hopefully we get some updates on this situation soon! You can check out the whole article right over HERE.

I’ll leave you guys with a pretty intriguing quote from Reitman himself from back in 1989. I’d say the potential for the ‘element of surprise’ in GHOSTBUSTERS 3 is very much there, what says you guys? Hit us with your opinions on the matter below and keep it here for all things GHOSTBUSTERS as we hear them!

“Ghostbusters II wasn’t as much fun to make as the first one. In comedy, the element of surprise is everything. And I think once that element of surprise is gone, once people know there’s going to be ghosts, there’s going to be big ghosts, and they’re expecting something big at the end, a lot of the tools that are at your disposal are gone.”
