David F. Sandberg to direct comic book adaptation The Unsound for Netflix

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

David F. Sandberg, who got his start with the horror movies LIGHTS OUT and ANNABELLE: CREATION before going off to direct the DC Comics adaptation SHAZAM!, has signed on to direct another comic book adaptation… but this one sounds like it's going to be something closer to his earlier works than to SHAZAM!

Sandberg will be directing a film based on Cullen Bunn and Jack T. Cole's BOOM! Studios comic THE UNSOUND. Skylar James will be writing the screenplay for the film, which will tell the story of

a psychiatrist who returns to the insane asylum where her mother once worked and is now a patient, hoping to quell a bloody wave of horror that’s been unleashed. As she descends down the rabbit hole and discovers hard truths about her own past, she comes to understand the hospital is hiding secrets of its own, and perhaps she and her mother have more in common than she realized.

BOOM! Studios' Ross Richie and Stephen Christy will be producing THE UNSOUND alongside Sandberg and his wife Lotta Losten. Sandberg and Losten recently formed a production company called Mångata. James will serve as an executive producer, as will Adam Yoelin.

There was a bidding war over the feature film rights to THE UNSOUND, and Netflix has emerged the winner.

We'll keep you updated as this project moves forward. If you'd like to pick up a copy of the THE UNSOUND TPB, you can do so at THIS LINK.
