Denis Villeneuve on why Blade Runner 2049 wasn’t a huge hit

One of the top movies I know all of us were looking forward to checking out this past summer was director Denis Villeneuve's sequel to Ridley Scott's masterpiece BLADE RUNNER.

While BLADE RUNNER 2049 was a major critical hit, the film had a hard time making an impact at the box-office. Not that the film didn't make money. It just didn't make enough to justify its massive budget.

Recently director Denis Villeneuve was asked why he thought the film had a hard time finding a wide audience and his reasons make sense to me.

Denis Villeneuve on BLADE RUNNER 2049:

I'm still digesting it. … I think because maybe people were not familiar enough with the universe. And the fact that the movie's long [2 hours, 44 minutes run time]. I don't know. It's still a mystery to me. I make movies — I don't sell them.

If pressed to say, personally, why I think the film wasn't a bigger hit, those two reasons would have been my top picks as well. That running time was a killer and while we're here, the R rating I'm sure didn't help.

But thank God it wasn't PG-13.  Just sayin'.

BLADE RUNNER 2049 synopsis:

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

BLADE RUNNER 2049 is directed by Denis Villeneuve from a script by Hampton Fancher (who wrote the original) and Michael Green. The script is based off a story by Hampton Fancher, which is in turn based on the original film's source material "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Phillip K. Dick.

The film stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Dave Bautista, Jared Leto, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Edward James Olmos, David Dastmalchian, Lennie James, Barkhad Abdi, Sylvia Hoeks, Hiam Abbass, Carla Juri, David Benson, Ellie Wright, and Kingston Taylor.
