Documentary You’re So Cool, Brewster! to tell the story of Fright Night

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Gary Smart obviously enjoys delving into the behind-the-scenes stories of 1980s genre classics. First, he penned the book THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD with co-author Christian Sellers, which led to the documentary MORE BRAINS! A RETURN TO THE LIVING DEAD. He then wrote and produced the nine hour documentary LEVIATHAN: THE STORY OF HELLRAISER AND HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II, which was released on DVD earlier this year.

Now Smart has set his sights on another beloved ’80s horror film, writing and producing the documentary YOU’RE SO COOL BREWSTER! THE STORY OF FRIGHT NIGHT.

Directed by Christopher Griffiths,

The Story of Fright Night will feature detailed interviews with those who helped shape and create this much loved movie. Guided by Tom Holland (Fright Night, Child’s Play, Psycho II, Class of 1984) the makers of this new documentary will raise the stakes and unearth the behind the scenes stories including footage and images from Tom’s personal archives.

Fully supported and produced by original Fright Night writer and director Tom Holland, this documentary is the ultimate insight into the making of this cult classic movie as well as a tribute to the late, great Roddy McDowall.

So far the documentary has set up interviews with FRIGHT NIGHT ’85 stars Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale, Stephen Geoffreys, Amanda Bearse, Jonathan Stark, Bob Corff, and Art Evans, along with special effects artists Steve Johnson, Richard Edlund, Randall William Cook, and Steve Neill. The story of the 1988 sequel will also be told by the likes of Tommy Lee Wallace, Julie Carmen, Jon Gries, Mark Irwin, and Miguel Tejada-Flores. And there are more interviewees yet to be announced.

FRIGHT NIGHT isn’t one of my favorites, but I do love hearing the stories that come up in these retrospective documentaries. It sounds like this will be a great release for FRIGHT NIGHT fans, and if you’d like to chip in to help make it happen (and secure a DVD copy), there is a Kickstarter campaign underway that’s very close to reaching its goal.
