According to Variety, Focus Features’ digital distribution initiative, Focus World, will distribute Cuban horror-comedy JUAN OF THE DEAD in North America this Spring. That’s good news for those of us eager to see the highly-regarded political allegory and splatterfest, which had successful festival showings at the Toronto Film Festival and Austin’s Fantastic Fest in 2011.

The pact with Focus World allows for JUAN to premiere at U.S. festivals and then receive a theatrical run from a separate distributor in April. It will also be made available through video-on-demand, iTunes, Xbox 360, Playstation, etc.; exact distribution dates have not been revealed as of yet.

Directed by Alejandro Brugues, JUAN OF THE DEAD takes place 50 years after the Cuban Revolution, and a new one is about to begin. That revolution is zombies; filthy, flesh-eating zombies. The Cubans face a large enough challenge dealing with a zombie infestation (allegedly started by U.S.-backed radical groups), but their procrastinating hero Juan (Alexis Díaz de Villegas) has to overcome his lazy lifestyle to save the world.
