Viewers who enjoyed KONG: SKULL ISLAND will get a chance to revisit the island and see Kong back in action sooner than expected. While Kong won't be in another movie until GODZILLA VS. KONG in 2020 (unless he shows up in some capacity in 2019's GODZILLA: KING OF MONSTERS), we'll have a story of his further adventures to hold us over until then - Legendary Comics is releasing a 4-part comic book series called Skull Island: The Birth of Kong.

Written by Arvid Nelson and featuring artwork by Zid, this series will function as both a sequel and a prequel to KONG: SKULL ISLAND. It tells the story of

a secret team of Monarch operatives returning to Skull Island to discover the truth behind Kong and the island he is born to protect. In doing so, they unlock an ancient history of monster conflict, witness the primal war between Kong and an otherworldly ecosystem of deadly new creatures, and finally reveal how this lonely god became the last of his kind.

With a dramatic new narrative that paves the way for what is to come, fans will discover new revelations that point to the future of the MonsterVerse.

The first issue will be on sale in print and on Comixology on April 5th. Less than three weeks from today.

A preview of the artwork can be seen below.

Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy, and Derek Connolly, KONG: SKULL ISLAND is set in

1973. Somewhere in our world, it is said that there exists a wondrous island unspoiled by man – a land shrouded in mystery, where myth runs wild. Uncharted and undiscovered.

What they find on Skull Island is an adventure beyond any human experience. An exotic paradise of wonders and terrors, where flora and fauna have fused together into an Eden of otherworldly jungle creatures.

As one group fights to escape and the other declares war on Kong, we discover that the mighty primate is at the center of a battle for dominion over the island, locked into a ‘survival of the fittest’ face-off with the terrifying apex predators responsible for wiping out his kin.

Driven by vengeance, Kong will become nature’s fury, and fight to take his rightful place upon the throne of most powerful beast on the island, revealing the story of how Kong became King.

Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly, Jason Mitchell, Corey Hawkins, Tian Jing, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell, and Eugene Cordero star.

The movie has been doing quite well at the box office, earning over $160 million worldwide during its first week of release.
