Netflix saves Joe Hill’s Locke & Key with 10-episode order

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Four months ago, Hulu passed on producing further episodes of IT director Andres Muschietti's adaptation of Joe Hill's LOCKE & KEY. But today we already have word via Deadline that Netflix has come to the show's rescue and ordered a full 10-episode first season.

That said, it turns out the Netflix will NOT be picking up the pilot, which Muschietti directed last year, which was written by Hill himself. Instead, the streaming giant is looking to redevelop and recast the show from the ground up.

Joe Hill and Carlton Cuse (BATES MOTEL) are staying on the creative team from the Muschietti pilot, but now we hear that they will be joined by Aron Eli Coleite and Meredith Averill.

The Hulu pilot’s cast included Jackson Robert Scott (who will stay on this new pilot), Frances O’Connor, Nate Corddry, Samantha Mathis, Owen Teague, and Danny Glover. Written by Hill, LOCKE & KEY is a horror/fantasy series that :

Revolves around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.

The new first episode will be written by Hill and Coleite, and Cuse and Averill will serve as showrunners. Muschietti will not be available to direct the new version but he will serve as an executive producer along with his sister Barbara Muschietti. Also exec producing are Lindsey Springer Ted Adams, David Ozer, David Alpert, and Rick Jacobs.

We'll let you know when we hear more!
