Netflix’s Velvet Buzzsaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal lands R-rating

Last Updated on July 21, 2021

Last week we were hit with the killer trailer for NIGHTCRAWLER writer-director Tony Gilroy's art-horror movie VELVET BUZZSAW (great f*cking title) and holy shit, right? Bring it on ASAP! Maybe it's because I just watched SUSPIRIA the other day and was blown away by the mixture of art and horror, or maybe it's just because the movie looks badass. I'm not sure. But it doesn't matter as I'm now counting down the days until I can peep it on Netflix.

And speaking of the now must-see horror motion picture, today we have word via the MPAA that the movie has scored an R-rating for "violence, language, some sexuality/nudity, and brief drug use." That's kind of a 'meh' rating for the movie that has such a balls-to-the-wall insane trailer. But it's all good. I'm sure it'll be visually arresting and freaky to boot. I'm already having nightmares about that damn robot-human hybrid thingamajig. Brr.

If you haven't had the pleasure of watching the film's trailer yet, give it a look-see below and then let us know what YOU think! And while we're all here, this is the movie's official synopsis:

After paintings by an unknown artist are discovered, a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art.

Let's just hope it's more NIGHTCRAWLER than NEON DEMON. Not that I hated NEON DEMON, I'm just saying.

VELVET BUZZSAW is written and directed by Dan Gilroy and produced by Jennifer Fox, Betsy Danbury, Donald Sparks, and David Feinsilber. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Toni Collette, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge, Natalia Dyer, Daveed Diggs, Billy Magnussen, and John Malkovich. It features music by Marco Beltrami (SCREAM). It premieres at Sundance on January 27 and hits Netflix (and limited theaters) on February 1, 2019
