New writer-director working on Blumhouse’s Spawn reboot

Back in May, we passed along word that Blumhouse and Todd McFarlane's upcoming SPAWN flick starring Jeremy Renner and Jamie Foxx was facing a financing hold up but MacFarlane assure fans he will still get the R-rated movie made – even if he has to finance it through Kickstarter. And today MacFarlane reveals that a new writer-director is currently working on the script.

Specifically, McFarlane says:

Right now it’s being polished by another writer-director from the script we handed him. He’s supposed to be done with it in a few weeks, and then once we go back and forth and tighten it up a bit, we’re going into Hollywood and we’re gonna get a yes or no. 

He continues:

Here’s what I can tell you: I have people with money on the sidelines. There are people that are gonna help me make this movie. The question is, do we go into Hollywood, make a deal with Hollywood, go and make the production, and then come back? Or do I take the outside money, go make it, and then come back to Hollywood? Either way, the movie’s coming. It’s not an ‘if,’ it’s a ‘when.’ I just think that it would be better for the process if we could attach one of the studios in advance, and then go put it out. Because then we’d be able to make an announcement of the release date, and a couple things that matter to the fans, knowing that it’s coming instead of making it and trying to get the release date later.

As far as the upcoming movie's plot, recently we got this bit of info, letting us know that Jeremy Renner's Twitch will carry us through the film: 

NYPD detective Twitch loses his daughter to gang violence. He then begins his quest for revenge by enlisting the help of his ex-partner Danny to aid in his investigation of the criminal factions in New York. Twitch quickly realizes he’s in over his head as he learns that two of the largest organizations are teaming up to take over the criminal underworld of the city. That’s where Spawn comes in. Twitch is visited by Al, a mysterious man who has knowledge of his daughter’s death. It quickly becomes clear that Al is not who he appears to be as he reveals himself to be Spawn, a messenger from Hell who can aid Twitch in his search for justice.

McFarlane is producing the new SPAWN film alongside Blumhouse Productions. The film is currently still seeking funding and a distributor and doesn't have a production start date yet, but hopefully, we'll hear more regarding all of that soon. Stayed tuned and we'll let you know when we hear more.
