Uber-filmmaker Steven Spielberg has been keeping his cinematic eye on ROBOPOCALYPSE for the better part of a year, and it today it looks like he’s committed wholeheartedly. That’s right y’all, Deadline calls it official: Spielberg will helm ROBOPOCALYPSE as his next feature!
The sci-fi project, one Spielberg was courting before the novel on which it’s based was even completed, has been adapted by Drew Goddard (CLOVERFIELD, CABIN IN THE WOODS). The story centers on the human race trying to quell a large-scale robot coup.
Of course, none of this should come as a real surprise, as not only Mo wrote about this probability a month ago, but Spielberg was once said to direct ROBOPOCALYPSE as his TINTIN successor…but opted to helm WAR HORSE (currently filming) instead. Word is Spielberg will lens his new sci-fi epic in January 2012 for a 2013 release.
So what’s the word? Stoked Spielberg is returning to what some would consider his comfort zone, or does the unspeakable abomination that is WAR OF THE WORLDS make you a bit skeptical?
