Rex Havoc’s a dream

Now that Dreamworks Animation has broken away and started out on its own, it was about time for them to start catering to the horror genre it neglected so (well, sort of).

In Variety, an article discussing Dreamworks’ future projects revealed that the studio is planning an animated version of REX HAVOC for release after 2009. Who or what is REX HAVOC? Glad you asked.

REX HAVOC was a comic put out by Warren that ran from 1984 to 1994 called Rex Havoc and the Ass-Kickers of the Fantastic (the team even had an emblem of a boot print superimposed over a pair of butt-cheeks). The story consisted of a team of experts out to kick the crap out of ghouls, ghosts and the like. Their leader is Rex, a fearless adventurer, who manages to lead the team despite severe brain damage brought on by a golf club-wielding vampire sneak attack. I kid you not, and it gets better. The film will be about Rex and the Ass-Kickers being called upon to battle aliens that have knocked out TV service. To help, he assembles a team of monsters with names like Ick!, Dr. Cockroach, and Insectosaurus.

Screenwriter Scott Rosenberg (of CON AIR fame) was attached to the script for a while, but it appears that Maya Forbes (The Larry Sanders Show) and Wally Wolodarsky (The Simpsons) are now doing the job.

Sounds like a nutball movie, but in a good way. Hopefully in the future, we’ll hear more about this one, along with any other Dreamworks-related features that involve ass-kicking. For more info on this and other Dreamworks projects (including a kung-fu panda), click here for the entire article.
