Child’s Play remake looking to cast Liv Tyler?

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Looks like MGM isn't playing around when it comes to their upcoming remake/reboot of Don Mancini's classic doll flick CHILD'S PLAY.  We already know that the new version will be heading our way from Norwegian filmmaker Lars Klevberg (the man behind the still unreleased teen horror film POLAROID) and will be penned by KUNG FURY 2 writer Tyler Burton Smith with STEPHEN KING'S IT producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith producing.

And today we have word (a rumor) via That Hashtag Show that the studio is hoping to court Mrs. Liv Tyler to play Andy's mother, Karen in the new film.

Is Tyler the right choice for this film? I'd say so. After all, Tyler is no stranger (no pun intended) to our beloved genre with such offerings under her belt as THE STRANGERS and the recent IFC Midnight offering WILDLING (which ironically co-starred Brad Dourif aka the voice of Chucky). Personally, I'd be more than happy to hear that this rumor is based on truth and that Tyler will be signing onto the remake any day now. She brings class to any and every project she signs on to. I say bring it on!

Plot details remain under wraps but Collider reports that the film is a contemporary reboot involving:

A group of kids (ala STRANGER THINGS), and a technologically-advanced doll that enters their world.

Universal owns the home entertainment rights, though it seems like MGM figured out a way to move forward with this reboot. Evidently, Don Mancini can still move ahead with his recently announced CHILD'S PLAY: THE TV SERIES

For those who may have forgotten, the original followed the tale of

Gunned down by Detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon), dying murderer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) uses black magic to put his soul inside a doll named Chucky — which Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks) then buys for her young son, Andy (Alex Vincent). When Chucky kills Andy's babysitter, the boy realizes the doll is alive and tries to warn people, but he's institutionalized. Now Karen must convince the detective of the murderous doll's intentions before Andy becomes Chucky's next victim.

The original 1988 film was directed by Tom Holland from a screenplay written by Don Mancini. It starred Catherine Hicks, Dinah Manoff, Chris Sarandon, Alex Vincent, and Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky. Not much else is known about the remake at this time, but we will make sure to keep you guys up-to-date on the film as it heads towards filming this September!
