There will never be an Event Horizon sequel or director’s cut

Have you ever caught yourself wishing that Paramount got off their asses and finally made a sequel to EVENT HORIZON? No? Can't blame you. How about this? Have you ever caught yourself wishing that Paramount got off their asses and produced a full-on unrated director's cut of the original EVENT HORIZON? Yeah, now we're getting somewhere.

Well, if you have ever hoped for EVENT HORIZON 2 or EVENT HORIZON: THE UNRATED DIRECTOR'S CUT, I'm sorry to have to tell you this but that sh*t just isn't going to happen.

Crave Online recently held a live Facebook Q&A with EVENT HORIZON director Paul W.S. Anderson and he talked at length about the film and the no-go sequel.

Paul W.S. Anderson on EVENT HORIZON:

There was a lot more that was shot that isn’t in the movie. But you’ll never see the messed up version because we made Event before the kind of DVD revolution. You know, DVD ushered in this era when you had to have additional footage, deleted scenes, things like that. There was no call for that back when we were just doing VHS cassettes and LaserDiscs.”

So the material just wasn’t archived very well, and since the movie became a big cult classic, Paramount has asked us to come back in and do different versions and we looked for the material, and it just doesn’t exist.”

Paul W.S. Anderson on EVENT HORIZON 2:

The things that kind of handicapped us the first time around, the fact that the movie isn’t tied up with a neat little bow, it left things open… at the time it was a handicap. I think maybe if it had all been really neat and there had been some monster running around killing everyone it probably would have done bigger business. But I think people still talk about it because it’s a movie that invites conversation afterward because we don’t tell you exactly what’s going on and what to think. And I think that’s become one of its strengths, and I think the danger of returning to that world is you don’t want to overexplain things.”

Not that I’m comparing my movie to 2001 [A Space Odyssey], but there’s 2001, amazing, and then there’s 2010, that explains everything. You wondered what that thing was? Well then, here’s the explanation. And you don’t need that."

While I agree that EVENT HORIZON doesn't need a sequel that overly explains everything that happened in the first flick, I'd still argue that a sequel could be f*cking amazingly as long as the writers just didn't, you know, over explain things.

Hell (natch), I say take the two ideas talked about above – the Event Horizon lost footage and the idea of an Event Horizon 2 – and combine them! Yes, make a prequel of sorts where we could see the original ship's crew and their descent into a living hell in space. That way you could just recreate the lost footage and tag it into the actual context of the new film.

But I dream…

Anyhow, let us know what you think of EVENT HORIZON and this news on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram, and make sure to check out The F*cking Black Sheep: Event Horizon video located below.
