How To Fight Aliens

Imagine being a going-nowhere slacker who has a crush on this really hot girl who hates you. Now imagine a secret society along the lines of the Men in Black all get killed and you find a book that thrusts you into the spotlight of saving the world from an alien invasion with said hottie by your side. That’s got to be a b*tch!

But alas, some poor (lucky?) soul is in for this adventure in the new flick THE HOW-TO GUIDE FOR SAVING THE WORLD. The Hollywood Reporter dropped word recently that BenDavid Grabinski has recently sold his script to MGM, who have tapped MEN IN BLACK director Barry Sonnenfeld to helm and produce HOW-TO.

Now here’s the description we get, which isn’t too far from what I said above: “World” tells the story of a loser who discovers a book on how to prevent an alien invasion and then has to put that knowledge to use when one actually occurs. Apparently the script has been a hit and has made it’s way onto the ‘unofficial Black List of most liked screenplays.’ Interesting.

Now I’m guessing this one will be sort of like TRANSFORMERS meets MEN IN BLACK… which doesn’t sound too intriguing when put that way. Let’s hope for the best though, seeing how this one has some major potential. Go all out! Sonnenfeld recently spoke a bit about what attracted him to the project, stating:

“I loved the writing and the concept: What would happen if, one afternoon, the secret group that protects Earth from alien invaders was wiped out? Fortunately, they left behind an instruction manual for saving Earth. Unfortunately, a non-action-hero guy — not unlike me in terms of manliness — and a woman who hates him find the book and have to save the planet from an impending attack.”

I’m getting a sort of unoriginal vibe here… but I’ll keep an open mind until we hear more. Keep it here for any more updates on THE HOW-TO GUIDE TO SAVING THE WORLD as we hear it.
