In March, we revealed that Ron Howard was going to be directing an adaptation of THE STRANGE ADVENTURES OF H.P. LOVECRAFT.
Howard talked a little about the comic and it’s possibilities, “It very cleverly uses H.P. Lovecraft in a fictional way, but there’s some loose biographical elements. But it certainly has the flavor and the tone of Lovecraft. The character is a very young Lovecraft… Look, it’s challenging, but if we get it right, it could be really original and psychologically interesting and scary in a great way. And it’s a graphic novel, this is new territory for me.”
Howard has directed some great movies (A BEAUTIFUL MIND, APOLLO 13, WILLOW, COCOON) and this will definitely be new territory for him. It would be interesting to see his perspective on the once and forever weird H.P. Lovecraft. But why the comic on Lovecraft? Why not take one of his own stories and turn it into something spectacular and imaginative? Not to say that the comic isn’t imaginative, it actually sounds intriguing as well.
Written by Mac Carter, ADVENTURES explores the younger years of Lovecraft. He’s in love with a girl who doesn’t love him back, writing provides him no respect, and to top it off he’s having a severe case of writer’s block. Things go from bad to worse when Lovecraft stumbles across an ancient book that passes on a terrible curse. Whenever the author sleeps his nightmares come to life and wreck havoc on the world. I bet you guys just want the Cthulhu.
