Idris Elba in talks to lead Everest filmmaker’s supernatural thriller Deeper

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

After debuting a fancy new super suit for FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW villain, Brixton, earlier this morning, Idris Elba is making headlines once more with the announcement that he's up for the lead in Baltasar Kormakur's upcoming supernatural thriller DEEPER. The project has BRIGHT and CHRONICLE scribe Max Landis penning the script, who is also producing alongside David Goyer, Kevin Turren, and Addictive Pictures.

DEEPER follows a former astronaut who was hired to take a submersible to the deepest part of the ocean. Supernatural events transpire as the vehicle gets closer to its destination, placing Elba's character in peril both otherworldly and inescapable.

Back in 2016, when the project was first getting its feet wet (hey-o), Bradley Cooper was attached to star, as was WONDER WOMAN alumna Gal Gadot. At that time, WHITE GOD filmmaker Kornel Mundruczo was set to helm the feature, that is until Cooper had to drop out – along with Mundruczo's plans to direct. That being the case, DEEPER was placed on the back burner until Landis and Kormakur pulled the concept from the depths.

Up next for Elba is his role as international terrorist leader and a criminal mastermind, Brixton, for FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW. The upcoming Fast spinoff that stars Dwayne Johnson as US Diplomatic Security Agent Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham as London-based badass Deckard Shaw, will deliver the action-packed tale of when both men must form an unlikely alliance after a cyber-genetically enhanced villain threatens the future of humanity. BABY DRIVER's Eiza González and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT alumna Vanessa Kirby also star.
