In The Heights & Scoob! “social distance” from their release dates

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

We're going to have to wait longer for Lin-Manuel Miranda's film adaptation of the hit musical, IN THE HEIGHTS, as well as the animated feature, SCOOB! Both films have had their releases delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

IN THE HEIGHTS, follows a bodega owner (Anthony Ramos) who has mixed feelings about closing his store and retiring to the Dominican Republic after he inherits his grandmother's fortune. The musical, directed by Jon M. Chu, was slated for release on June 26 and no new release date has been announced for the film at this time. Lin-Manuel Miranda hinted at a possible delay when he sat down for Rosie O'Donnell's charity event special on Sunday.

SCOOB!, which features the vocal talent of Mark Wahlberg, Mckenna Grace, Zac Efron, Amanda Seyfried, Jason Isaacs, Ken Jeong, Gina Rodriguez & Will Forte, was originally expected to hit screens on May 15. Like IN THE HEIGHTS, no new date has been set for the film. In this latest take on Scooby-Doo, SCOOB! sees Scooby and the gang facing their most challenging mystery ever: a plot to unleash the ghost dog Cerberus upon the world.

Both films come from Warner Bros. which made some moves yesterday when they shifted WONDER WOMAN 1984 from June 5 to August 14. The move caused the studio to move James Wan's MALIGNANT from the August date and now that film needs a new home as well. The studio did not announce any moves for Christopher Nolan's TENET, which is set to open on July 17.

These films are the latest of a plethora of films that have their releases delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. With the bulk of movie theaters closed nationwide, it makes sense that studios are pulling the releases until they find a better time to open them. It'll be interesting to see if a lot of these releases will actually come out this year or if they will be pushed to 2021 but it's encouraging that WONDER WOMAN 1984 is just moving to August, which indicates, at least to Warner Bros., that there is an end in sight for the pandemic.

Were YOU looking forward to seeing these films?
