I remember as a kid, watching Cartoon Network before it had really any original programming, and binging on tons of SUPERFRIENDS reruns. As cheesy and dumb as that show often was, I have to admit that that show was probably my gateway drug into loving the DC universe and getting into comics (alongside the 90s BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, of course). The best iteration of that show was the one where they fought THE LEGION OF DOOM, consisting of villains like Lex Luthor, Bizarro, and…Toyman? However, my favorite guy was always Black Manta, because he looked boss-as-shit. I actually remember being disappointed when I found out he was Aquaman’s baddie.
Anyway, it’s nice seeing him kick ass in the above game footage, in ways his stiffly animated counterpart couldn’t – or wouldn’t. I guess I’m not the only one who thought he looked cool as hell – Aquaman villain or no (though, after the Jason Momoa iteration, “Aquaman sucks” jokes might be a thing of the past. Pity).
