It’s nearly impossible to imagine the patience fans of Frank Herbert’s Dune have had. Aside from the fascinating documentary, Jodorowsky’s Dune, there’s been little to satiate the hunger for a great cinematic retelling since David Lynch’s attempt back in 1984. That brings us to Denis Villeneuve. The filmmaker behind Sicario, Prisoners, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049 has created masterful work. And his latest is yet another success. Based on the original novel, the first part offers stunning images on-screen that are so good, it’s easy to forget that you are looking at special effects at all. From the incredible set design, the gorgeous score, to the fantastic casting, this extravaganza will thrill fans who have been waiting for decades to see this world done so beautifully.
Both Chris Bumbray and I recently had the chance to speak with Denis about his latest. For my part, it was an absolute joy to discuss this picture. Not only did the filmmaker open up about the challenges of doing something this massive, but he also talked about finding the right sound and score with Hans Zimmer. The passion this man has for Dune and the work of Frank Herbert is clear. And this is most obvious from the finished project that is heading into a theatre near you this Friday. If you aren’t feeling up for going to the movies, you also have the option of watching this one on HBO Max – although Dune is astonishing on the big screen if you can make it.
