Jai Courtney on James Gunn’s “tonally different” take on The Suicide Squad

From a box-office perspective, David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD did quite well, and although the film certainly has its fans, Warner Bros. seems to have taken the generally negative reviews to heart. The upcoming sequel from James Gunn (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) will still take place in the same universe, but it can't help but feel somewhat like a soft reboot. The recently announced cast includes a number of familiar faces returning, but the majority will be brand-new to the SUICIDE SQUAD universe.

One of the cast-members of SUICIDE SQUAD who has returned for the sequel is Captain Boomerang himself, Jai Courtney. The actor recently spoke with ComicBook.com and was asked whether or not the shift from David Ayer to James Gunn is going to be weird.

I don’t think it’s going to be weird. It’s kind of funny that we’re getting it up to go again and there’s a bunch of new people and a bunch of old people, too. It’s going to be different, for sure, but I think everyone’s welcoming that challenge and welcoming the new energy in. I loved David, I loved working with David, I’d work with David again in a heartbeat. But Gunn, too, is quite prolific and really, obviously, does know what he’s doing. I’m excited to see what he brings to it. It’s going to be tonally different but very cool as well. The world has evolved from where we were at at that point; he’s going to have his own take on it, and it’s going to be great.

I assume that Gunn will be bringing a little of that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY wackiness along with him, but with the added freedom of being able to kill off a good chunk of his new cast. In addition to Jai Courtney, THE SUICIDE SQUAD will also feature Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, and Viola Davis reprising their roles from the first film. New additions include Idris Elba, John Cena, Nathan Fillion, David Dastmalchian, Michael Rooker, Storm Reid, Taika Waititi, Peter Capaldi, and more.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD slated for an August 6, 2021 release
