James Gunn says he’s not making a “young Superman” movie

Despite the 10-year gap between David Corenswet and Henry Cavill, James Gunn assures fans he isn’t making a “young Superman” movie.

James Gunn, Superman: Legacy, screen tests

Just because David Corenswet is a decade younger than Henry Cavill doesn’t mean that James Gunn is planning on making a young Superman movie, taking to social media to dispel whatever rumors there may be that the upcoming Superman: Legacy would purposefully focus on the age aspect of Clark Kent.

This week, James Gunn replied to a follower on Threads (yeah, that’s still around), “I was never making a “young Superman” movie, just a Superman movie!” For comparison, Corenswet turned 30 last month, while Cavil is now 40, although that doesn’t necessarily dictate the timeline. Still, as The Hollywood Reporter pointed out, James Gunn did say last year that the new Superman movie “will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life.”

While the official plot of James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy has yet to be unveiled, it has been reported that much of the story will take place in Metropolis, with Corenswet working at the Daily Planet alongside Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane. Since the project was announced, James Gunn – who also serves as writer – has worked on filling out the cast, which will also include Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner aka Green Lantern, Isabela Merced (Sweet Girl) as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho, and Edi Gathergi (The Harder They Fall) as Mister Terrific.

More importantly to DC fans, Superman: Legacy will launch the DC Universe, a sort of rebranding of existing properties and fresh start to what has generally been considered a series of disappointments collectively known as the DC Extended Universe. The most recent entry, Blue Beetle, is looking to exceed initial expectations at the box office. Superman: Legacy is set to fly to theaters on July 11th, 2025.

The character of Superman most recently appeared in numerous forms in The Flash, with Nicolas Cage turning up and the likes of Christopher Reeve, George Reeves and, yes, Henry Cavill getting the CGI treatment, although some of these were not without their controversy.
