James Gunn would be down for a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Ho ho hold up! Are we really about to discuss the notion of a holiday special? Look, I know that it’s only mid-April, but damn right we are! Earlier this afternoon, amidst all of the exciting Star Wars-related foofarah, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 director James Gunn let it fly that he and President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige had discussed the possibility of creating a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

The reveal came by way of Gunn’s response to a fan question via his personal Twitter account. You can take a look at those tweet for yourself by peeping the images below:

When askes about what the holiday special would entail, Gunn made a reference to the questionably-good 1978 “Star Wars Holiday Special.” Gunn admitted that while the special has its faults, he doesn’t want to replicate the sci-fi musical, even if he does appreciate the strange, off-kilter spirit of the TV event. If anything, he’d want to recapture the memory of that special rather than the presentation itself.

If you ask me, Holiday Specials don’t get any better than Pee -Wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special! That bizarre orgy of reindeer games and guest stars wore bananas for pants, man! Pee-Wee is already strange enough, but when you add contributors like Grace Jones, a young Laurence Fishburn as Cowboy Curtis, Ricardo, the King of Cartoons, Jambi, Charro, Magic Johnson, Whoopi Goldberg, K.D. Lang, Little Richard, Joan Rivers and Oprah Winfrey, you’ve guaranteed yourself a wild ride, my friend.

Ha ha ha! I think I totally just showed my age. I mean, are holiday specials even a thing anymore? I honestly wouldn’t know, seeing as I haven’t owned a cable box in nearly ten years. Anyway, if James Gunn were to make a GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY HOLIDAY SPECIAL, you can bet all of the cookies and milk left out for old St. Nick that I’d be there to watch it.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell will be touching down in theaters on May 5, 2017.
