Janina Gavankar to star in monster movie based on the myth of the Rakshasa

In addition to appearing in The Morning Show and THE WAY BACK, Janina Gavankar has crossed paths with creatures and maniacs in TV shows like The Gates, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, and Sleepy Hollow, as well as the films WHITE ORCHID and CUP OF MY BLOOD. Last year, she made her writing and directing debut with the genre short STUCCO (which you can watch HERE), and now it has been announced that she and her STUCCO co-writer/co-director Russo Schelling have scripted a horror feature that Gavankar will be starring in.

This feature doesn't currently have a title, but apparently it's a

female-driven monster movie based on the ancient Hindu myth of the Rakshasa. Rakshasa is a bloodthirsty demon that makes mankind its prey after being banished from the realm of the gods and forced to live among men.

108 Media are financing and producing, with Abhi Rastogi, Matthew Francis Wilson, and Justin Deimen serving as executive producers. Filming is set to take place in India.

I hadn't heard of Rakshasa before this announcement, but it definitely sounds like an interesting story for a film to explore.

Gavankar is also set to co-star with Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer in the sci-fi thriller INVASION, which Amazon Studios will be producing with Raw and Film4. The last we heard about that project, it was aiming to start filming in the United States sometime before the end of the year.
