It was quite a surprise when GODZILLA rights holders Toho Corporation agreed to allow for another American remake of the classic monster movie since the 1998 attempt was so poorly received. Toho had originally planned to remake the film themselves, but after technical issues delayed the production, they allowed Legendary Pictures to acquire the rights.
It was recently announced that Gareth Edwards (MONSTERS) is close to signing a deal to direct the American remake, and it seemed like things were on the right track. As of now, however, it appears that Toho are still moving forward with their own reboot. They are planning on having a 3D remake out in December of 2012. Legendary also plans to release their version of GODZILLA next year, so kaiju may get a double dose of the big lug!
Of course, Toho is still early in pre-production and may back off. The company declared that they wouldn’t make any GODZILLA movies for ten years in 2004 (the 50th anniversary of the original), but we all know money talks. Hopefully some light is shed on the situation soon.
