Jared Leto becomes the first person to scale New York City’s iconic Empire State Building to completion

Versatile actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto scales New York City’s Empire State Building to completion for funsies!

In case you were wondering what Jared Leto was up to this morning, the chameleon-like actor and frontman of the rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars was busy climbing New York City’s iconic Empire State Building! Yup! You know, like you do!

Leto engaged in the first-ever complete climb of the landmark on the morning of November 9. Leto says he’s been fascinated with the historic building since he was a kid and could not think of a better way to celebrate the launch of Thirty Seconds to Mars’ 2024 tour than by scaling the massive structure. “The building is a testament of all the things that can be done in the world if we put our minds to it,” Jared explains, “which is largely the inspiration behind our most recent album, It’s The End Of The World But It’s A Beautiful Day.”

Leto’s climb up the Empire State is almost as radical as the band’s change in sound for its new album. When most people think about Thirty Seconds to Mars, they recall the band’s 2006 emo anthem, “The Kill,” as the group’s flagship single. “The Kill” is a soaring track with a sound akin to bands like My Chemical Romance, Angels and Airwaves, and Strata. Songs from the band’s new album, including “Stuck” and “Seasons,” present the musical ensemble (Jared Leto, Shannon Leto, Tomo Miličević, Matt Wachter, Solon Bixter) with radically different, poppy, club-banger-inspired vibes. Straight up, I could not believe the difference. Still, I love it when bands explore their boundaries, and the “new” Thirty Seconds to Mars is much more my speed than the original incarnation.
