Jason Reitman wants to scare children with the new Ghostbusters

Jason Reitman, director of the GHOSTBUSTERS sequel that's going to be released next year and son of GHOSTBUSTERS / GHOSTBUSTERS II director Ivan Reitman, had said that he might have a surprise for fans attending the Ghostbusters Fan Fest in Los Angeles on Saturday… but the surprise might have been spoiled on Friday, when Sigourney Weaver stated in an interview that she would be reprising the role of GHOSTBUSTERS 1 and 2 character Dana Barrett in the new film. That same interview also said original Ghostbusters Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd will be in it with her. So by the time Reitman made his appearance at the Fan Fest, he could only confirm that

Sigourney has read the screenplay… Dan has read it… Ernie (Hudson)’s read the script… Bill Murray has read the script."

Reitman also said that, if all goes as planned, his GHOSTBUSTERS will head into production in five weeks. He didn't give details, but it's rumored that filming will take place in Calgary from July through October.

A follow-up to the first two GHOSTBUSTERS, and thus not connected to the 2016 reboot, this film is set to star Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace as

a family who moves back home to a small town. While there, they begin to learn more about who they are and the secrets of the town itself.

Reitman said that Coon, Wolfhard, and Grace are

all three extraordinary actors, and you kinda go, ‘I want to find a way to work with them.’ … If you're looking for a Ghostbusters fan, there isn't a bigger one than Mckenna Grace."

He describes the project as "a love letter to the original movie", and mentioned that

One of my favorite things about movies [in the '80s] is that they can be funny and scary at the same time. … I want to scare children."

Reitman wrote the screenplay for the new film with Gil Kenan. Although he hasn't directed anything remotely like this before, I think this GHOSTBUSTERS is in very good hands with him.

Sony will be releasing Jason Reitman's GHOSTBUSTERS on July 10, 2020.
