Jason Segel and Drew Pearce to write and co-direct a new LEGO spin-off movie

Looks like there is now another LEGO movie in development at Warner Bros and this one is coming from an unexpected source. On top of THE LEGO MOVIE 2, NINJAGO, and THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE, we can now add THE BILLION BRICK RACE to the slate of animated films. This news spin-off will come courtesy of Jason Segel and IRON MAN 3 writer Drew Pearce.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, THE BILLION BRICK RACE will be co-written and co-directed by Segel and Pearce and produced by THE LEGO MOVIE's Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Dan Lin and Roy Lee. There is no plot or release date details at this point as the project is early in development, but the idea hatched by the two writers excited WB enough to move forward with the film.

Despite resurrecting THE MUPPETS at Disney, Segel served only as writer. THE BILLION BRICK RACE will represent his feature directorial debut. Pearce recently scripted MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION and is developing a GHOSTBUSTERS script at Sony. Both are talented writers and unproven directors, but LEGO is such an open world that there is plenty of room for these guys to play. If THE MUPPETS was any indication, this could spin the franchise in a very different direction and widen it for more spin-offs in the future.

LEGO NINJAGO will hit theaters on September 23, 2016, THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE in 2017, and THE LEGO MOVIE SEQUEL in 2018.
