Looks like the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is about to get another big screen treatment. This time, however, the mad doctor will be singing his lungs out. That’s right, with the success of EVITA, CHICAGO, and RENT somebody has decided to give the musical JEKYLL AND HYDE its shot at the silver screen.
That someone is producer Jonathan Sanger, appropriately having just finished producing THE PRODUCERS. He says that the world is safe for musicals now. Probably true, but I don’t know that it’s safe for bad musicals.
At this point I have to admit that I am a fan of musical theater. I like strippers, beer and football too, but musicals are fun times in my book. I’ve seen LES MIZ six times and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR five. If you think less of me for that then so be it, but I know of what I speak. JEKYLL AND HYDE is a bad show. It had to resort to stunt casting for the lead which included a stint by David Hasselhoff, and Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach.
I doubt many of you out there were going to put a new Hollywood musical at the top of your watch lists anyway, but if you happen to be one of the other 5 hardcore genre fans who dig Broadway too, well this warning to stay away is for you.
