A Jem and the Holograms TV series is gearing up to take the stage at Amazon

Back in the day, I used to pretend my hairbrush was a microphone and sing along to Jem and the Holograms while wearing a fluffy platinum blonde wig from Party City. What? I was a strange kid, what can I tell you? Want to talk about the time I dressed in a red sequined nighty with high heels, full makeup, and a long, curly blonde wig to promote my family’s garage sale? No? Well, then let’s get to the news! According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios is developing a Jem and the Holograms TV series with Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan via Kilter Films. It’s taken a hot minute for the project to come together, but it’s finally happening!

Joy, Nolan, and Athena Wickham will executive produce for Kilter Films, with Gabriel Marano from Hasbro Entertainment.

What is Jem and the Holograms about?

Created by Christy Marx, the Jem and the Holograms animated series debuted 41 years ago. Inspired by the rise in popularity of music videos on MTV, the series followed record company owner Jerrica Benton and her alter ego, Jem, lead singer of the rock group Jem and the Holograms. It featured music videos in every episode and a slew of original songs, including the theme “Truly Outrageous.” Believe it or not, Jem became more popular than Transformers and Masters of the Universe, especially after the show went into syndication throughout the 1990s.

Is the second time the charm?

A live-action movie, titled Jem and the Holograms (read our review here), directed by Crazy Rich Asians and Wicked filmmaker Jon M. Chu, was released in 2015. Starring Aubrey Shea as Jerrica, Stefanie Scott as Kimber, Aurora Perrineau as Shana, Hayley Kiyoko as Aja, and Molly Ringwald as Aunt Bailey, the movie is awful. It blows my mind to think that Chu directed the live-action Jem movie, but he did. The movie feels like an extended YouTube video rather than an actual movie, but hey, not every release can be a banger.

Jem and the Holograms remains a fun property to revisit, and a new spin on the concept could work wonders for the right audience. As an old-school fan of the animated series, I hope this live-action adaptation is truly outrageous!
