After signing KON-TIKI directors Espen Sandberg and Joachim Ronning and aiming for a rumored 2016 release date, hope seemed all but lost that PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES would even happen. With Johnny Depp riding a losing streak at the box office, Disney may have decided to hedge their bets on another several hundred million budget for the fifth film in a franchise already suffering from diminishing returns. But, fear not fans of the PIRATES franchise as it looks like the movie may still be coming.

Super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer was asked about the film’s status to which he said it looks likely that it will film, with Johnny Depp in the lead, sometime “after the first of the year”. Filming in early 2015 would still keep PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES right in line for a summer 2016 release as previously planned. The original aim was to have the film premiere summer 2015 but obviously that is not going to happen.

Rumors have the plot involving witches, ghosts, and the Bermuda Triangle. Only Captain Jack Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush‘s Hector Barbossa are slated to return from the prior films. Hopefully they can find something more original that the weak fourth film which was directed by the abyssmal Rob Marshall.
