One flick I don’t think will ever see the light of day is GREMLINS 3. Fans and Joe Dante alike have been talking about a possible third entry to the franchise for what feels like forever! And the kicker is Dante has always seemed keen on the idea… until today.
You see folks, IGN recently sat down with the legendary director to talk about his upcoming feature THE HOLE 3D. Needless to say the topic of interest quickly turned to GREMLINS 3. And what did Mr. Dante have to say about the project this time? Check it:
“There are no plans in the offing to do another Gremlins movie. I think that because of the CGI situation and the fact that you can now do anything when you make a movie… the original films were limited by the scope of what we could do technically, and that’s what the movies became about. Now it’s so wide-open, you can almost do anything, and I don’t think they’ve got a handle on what kind of movie it would be.”
As far as whether or not he’ll work on a sequel if one does indeed get greenlit:
“I don’t think so. I think it’s probably time for me to let somebody new take a shot at it. I did Gremlins 2, which was my deconstruction of Gremlins, and I don’t want to do a deconstruction of both of them.”
But that’s not all! It seems Dante is A-Ok with the idea of letting another filmmaker come in and reboot his beloved franchise:
“I don’t see why not. A lot of directors have sat back and watched people remake or re-imagine their films. We forget that a lot of the films that we like the most and are classics are actually remakes of films that are not as well-known.”
Well alright then. Sure this is a hard hit to take but at least we know now, right? Though all this talk doesn’t the possibility of more Gremlins adventures is dead just yet so if/when news breaks on another GREMLINS project we’ll be sure to let you all know!
