For fans of the original horror / sci-fi classic known as John Carpenter’s THE THING, it’s almost sacrilegious to know Hollywood is making a ‘prequel’ to the flick as we speak, as filming just went under way this week in Toronto, Canada.

I say almost sacrilegious, because the movie geek in me is jumping for joy at the chance to see just what the f*ck happened at the Norwegion camp that we only catch a glimpse of in the 1982 original. I mean, at least it’s really not a remake, right?

The boys at STYD recently touched based with star Joel Edgerton about what people can expect from the prequel, and his answer may both shock and please you… check it out: Being a prequel you’ll see a lot of tie-ins as to how the base comes to be the way it is in the Carpenter film, being so destroyed, and that evidence you see in the Carpenter film, We’ll get a glimpse into that… For anyone who has not seen the original, it will just be a self-contained film, but it also has a lot of curious links and snaps of the old movie for the people who are fans or are familiar with the Carpenter movie.

And that, folks, is just the tip of the iceberg. I can’t wait to see whether the special effects hold up to the original film, which may sound ludicrious considering Carpenter’s film came out about 28 years ago, but the effects still hold up strong today, and stronger than some of the CGI stuff that’s out there. Will they be able to outdo Carpenter’s THE THING in terms of gross-out effects, or simply be on par?

Speaking of effects, Edgerton touches on some of the creature effects… which you can check out HERE when you dive into the full interview. Stick around for more on THE THING prequel as it comes our way.
