Josh Brolin as Quasimodo? Hmmm…
According to THR’s Heat Vision, Brolin is spear-heading an attempt for Warner Bros. to bring Victor Hugo’s classic 1831 story THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME to the big screen once again, trying to enlist the help of director Tim Burton (DARK SHADOWS) who’s like a magnet to stories about ostracized freaks.
HUNCHBACK, which will come from scribes Kieran and Michele Mulroney (SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS), “tells the story of Quasimodo, a deformed and hunchbacked bell-ringer of the Norte Dame cathedral who tragically falls in love with beautiful gypsy named Esmerelda.” We’ve most recently seen the tale take animated form thanks to Disney back in 1996, and then decades back with the terrific 1939 version starring Charles Laughton as the title character.
Brolin will produce and star, though it’s not made explicitly clear that he would be taking on the role of the hunchback. Burton’s involvement, however, is up in the air. The director is currently knee-deep in pre-production on his upcoming gothic soap revival DARK SHADOWS. And while he’s reportedly interested in HUNCHBACK, his official attachment is contingent on first seeing a script.
