The story of the making of JUSTICE LEAGUE might potentially end up being more interesting – and dramatic – than the film itself. Anyone who has been keeping up with the news of this film knows that production of JUSTICE LEAGUE began immediately after BATMAN V SUPERMAN (when WB thought they had a surefire critical and financial hit); however, after the disastrous critical reception (whatever you think of the film personally), it reportedly led to a massive tonal shift to JUSTICE LEAGUE (including condensing the two-part film into one). Then, after that, Snyder was met with a family tragedy that forced him away from the film, where Joss Whedon (who was already on the WB lot for BATGIRL and doing rewrites on JUSTICE LEAGUE) stepped in to finish the film.
Thing is, after the extensive (and expensive) reshoots, people are wondering how much is Whedon, and how much is Snyder. While it may be forever impossible to know, to help put some rumors to rest, here’s what producer Charles Roven said about the project:
That imprint that Joss had, some aspect of it is going to come out in the direction, but the actors are already pretty much down the road on their arcs. Let’s just say 80, 85 percent of the movie is what was originally shot. There’s only so much you can do with other 15, 20 percent of the movie.
Again, to be fair, it’s probably impossible to fully calculate what someone’s contributions on something like this (unlike high school group projects where it was obvious I was doing all the work guys!), but it does seem to fit the narrative that this is Zack Snyder‘s film with Whedon sprinkled in, like raisins in Raisin Bran cereal. Whether that’s true or not remains to be seen, of course. Also, I’m hungry for some cereal all of a sudden…
Meanwhile, we’ll see for ourselves when JUSTICE LEAGUE swings into theaters November 17th.
