Justified and X-Men stars join Marvel’s Helstrom, Vuckovic to direct

Daniel Cudmore David Meunier

A couple months ago, we heard that Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon had signed on to star in the Hulu / Marvel series Helstrom as Daimon and Ana Helstrom,

the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. The siblings have a complicated dynamic as they track down the worst of humanity — each with their attitude and skills.

Since then, some further information has been revealed about the show's cast and lineup of directors.

First up, Daniel Cudmore has been cast in the recurring role of Keith Spivey, "a nurse at St. Teresa’s, where Daimon and Ana’s mother, Victoria, has been institutionalized for the last 20 years." Cudmore is no stranger to adaptations of Marvel properties, as he played the role of Colossus in X2, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, and X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

Also joining the cast in a recurring role is David Meunier, whose credits include Damien, Aquarius, and 37 episodes of Justified. On Helstrom he'll be playing Finn Miller, "part of a secret organization that handles work not for the faint of heart."

Previously announced cast members are Elizabeth Marvel as Victoria Helstrom, "Plagued by demons both real and imagined, Victoria has been institutionalized for 20 years. While she struggles to be herself, she hopes to repair her relationship with her children"; Robert Wisdom as Caretaker, "a guardian of knowledge of the occult. He uses his knowledge and his relationship with Ana to help keep demonic forces at bay"; June Carryl as Dr. Louise Hastings, "a psychologist with a strong faith but an open mind. Hastings is head of the psychiatric hospital where Victoria is being monitored. She has watched over the Helstrom family for years, caring for them as best she can"; Ariana Guerra as Gabriella Rossetti, "a woman balancing logic and faith. Gabriella arrives from the Vatican to help Daimon and Hastings uncover cases of demonic possession. She wants to save everyone she can, including Daimon"; and Alain Uy as Chris Yen, "Ana's business partner and her closest friend — some would say surrogate brother. He carries out the bulk of the auction house's responsibilities and assists Ana with whatever she needs."

According to the website HNEntertainment, directors of Helstrom episodes will include Amanda Row, Michael Offer, Daina Reid, Sanford Bookstaver, and Jovanka Vuckovic.

Genre fans will probably be most familiar with Vuckovic, who directed RIOT GIRLS and a segment of the anthology XX. Vuckovic was also the editor of Rue Morgue Magazine for six and a half years.

A co-production between Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios, Helstrom is being executive produced by Jeph Loeb and Paul Zbyszewski.

With the Netflix Marvel shows having come to an end, Freeform's Cloak & Dagger having been cancelled, plans for a Ghost Rider series being scrapped, and Hulu's Runaways and ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. entering their final seasons, Helstrom is the last live-action Marvel TV show to be developed under Loeb. Loeb announced in October that he would be leaving his position as the head of Marvel Television. Kevin Feige, producer of the Marvel Studios feature films, is now Marvel's chief creative officer and has oversight of all divisions, including television.

So it will be interesting to see if Helstrom will be one season and done so Feige can reboot Marvel Television with a clean slate, or if the show will hang around for a while.
