Now that the much-contested release of STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is behind her, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy is prepared to give an update on the studio's long-gestating Indiana Jones project, which is now confirmed to be a sequel, not a reboot.
Kennedy told BBC as much while on the red carpet at this year's BAFTA celebration. The story goes that while cruising the scene, Kennedy was approached by BBC, and when asked to give an update about the movie, Kennedy replied, “We’re working away, getting the script where we want it to be and then we’ll be ready to go.” She then went on to confirm, “Harrison Ford will be involved, yeah. It’s not a reboot; it’s a continuation.”
For the moment, Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled for a July 9, 2021 release, despite experiencing a myriad of production woes. Word has it that the film is coming along, albeit slowly, but that fans should remain hopeful for an adventure that's well worth waiting for. Rumors of there being a fifth film in the series had started in 2008, in and around the time when Lucasfilm had released the oh-so-underwhelming fourth installment, INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL. Shortly thereafter, whispers about the film's progress had grown quiet. However, in 2015, Kennedy spoke with Vanity Fair and said that the project was very much a part of their plan going forward.
Fast-forward to September 2019, to when we find screewriter David Koepp talking about his contribution to what will eventually be a fifth film starring Harrison Ford as the iconic adventurer. “I’m working on it again. We’re still trying. And I think we’ve got a good idea this time. We’ll see.” Unfortunately, even though Koepp was happy to report that progress is being made, we've still got no idea as to what an Indy 5 script would entail.
