Well here’s an interesting piece of news coming our way via Variety. Apparently Kevin Smith and producing partner Jonathan Gordon, or ‘The Harvey Boys’ as they’ve dubbed themselves for their years of Weinstein training, are planning on selling the rights to RED STATE via an auction immediately following the film’s premiere screening at the Eccles Center this Sunday at Sundance. They’re doing this live in front of the film’s premiere audience sans press or industry screenings. Ballsy… Then again from what it seems this is a pretty ballsy flick.
So what do you guys think? Another pretty interesting development in the RED STATE saga, no? This flick is getting all kinds of attention, both good and bad, which is always a good thing. Smith is assuming the flick will sell in the $6-8 Million range while Gordon is hoping for a bigger sale. Smith even goes on to say he wouldn’t rule out choosing a lower bid if the distributor is passionate enough about the film. Smith describes RED STATE: “It’s about America’s dark fucking heart.” Nice.
RED STATE consultant Bob Hawk adds: “When I read the first draft, I thought I knew where it was going and it kept surprising me. I couldn’t believe where this thing went. I hope it blows people’s minds. I think it will.”
While that’s a pretty jam packed update in itself that’s not all the RED STATE news we’ve got for you today! Over at SilentBobSpeaks.com, Kevin Smith’s official blog, you’ll find a press release all about the battle between the filmmakers and the Westboro Baptist Church, which were the inspiration for the film. You see the Westboro Baptist Church are planning on protesting the RED STATE screening this Sunday outside the Eccles Theater. So what is Kevin Smith planning to do about this? Why counter-protest of course!
“For thirty minutes of fun-filled photo-opportunities (beginning sharply at 6 PM), the Harvey Boys will peacefully counter-protest the WBC Eccles Theater Protest. All are welcome. Wear YOUR dopey sentiments nobody gives a shit about on a sign of your own making, as you stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the folks who’ve mastered the art of writing utter horseshit on cardboard! BYOS (Bring Your Own Sign)”
Oh that crazy ‘Silent Bob.’ This just adds that much more to the ongoing controversial saga behind RED STATE. Dare I say all this hoop-lah just adds that much more potential to the flick? And yes… I just said hoop-lah. Smith finishes off the press release with the following:
“GOD DOESN’T HATE FAGS OR ANYBODY ELSE FOR THAT MATTER. GOD SAVES! THEN, GOD PASSES IT TO GRETZKY – WHO ROOFS THAT SHIT, TOP-SHELF! THEN GOD AND GRETZKY HIGH FIVE & BELLY-BUMP, CELEBRATING THEIR HOCKEY PROWESS. AND NEVER ONCE DO THEY GIVE A SHIT IF ANYBODY’S GAY OR NOT.”
Nice. For a look at the entire press release just head on over to SilentBobSpeaks. To end this jam-packed RED STATE update I’m going to go ahead and remind you all of the details once again.
Red State begins by following three horny high-school boys who come across an online ad from an older woman looking for a gang bang. Boys being boys, they hit the road to satisfy their libidinal urges. But what begins as a fantasy takes a dark turn as they come face-to-face with a terrifying “holy” force with a fatal agenda.
The film stars Michael Angarano, Kerry Bishe, Nicholas Braun, Kyle Gallner, John Goodman, Melissa Leo, Michael Parks, Kevin Pollak and Stephen Root. It’s set to premiere at Sundance this Sunday, January 23rd so be sure to keep it here for all the RED STATE news that is sure to come our way in the coming days!
