Growing up, besides sitting around corrupting my brain by watching super violent horror movies, I used to sit around rotting my brain reading MAD Magazine and Tales from the Crypt comic books. Sure, by the time I was reading the Tales comics (alongside Vault of Horror and others) they were reprints from the original 50s comics, but they were cool none-the-less.
But enough with memory lane. AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON director John Landis has signed on to direct GHOULISHLY YOURS, WILLIAM M. GAINES, a bio-pic of the editor and creator of EC comics. William Gaines, who gave us those wonderfully ghoulish and grotesque tales of horror.
But besides just delivering the first (and arguably, still the best) when it comes to horror comics, he fought the Supreme Court on First Amendment Rights, when the government tried to blame violent comic books for juvenile delinquency. Man, the government and the public has been blaming the genre for the demise of society since day one!
Joel Eisenberg is currently writing the screenplay, the whole story of EC Comics sticking it to the man and making a product that kids couldn’t get enough of is awesome, and I couldn’t think of a better director than Landis to tackle the project. Dare I saw early Oscar contender? We shall see…
