I always try to show support for independent filmmakers — especially if it’s someone I know, and they make something groovy.
My Canadian chum Troy Nixey has done that with his short film LATCHKEY’S LAMENT, a bizarre yet touching tale about the love between two keys, and the creature who wants to eat them. (Yes, really.) It’s very polished and stylistically evocative of directors like Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam, and impressive enough that it landed on the schedule for the illustrious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which begins this week. I swear I’m going to make it to the Toronto fest one of these years — besides all the high-profile premieres and screenings, the MIDNIGHT MADNESS program alone is usually worth the trip. This year has new Argento, the horror flick from HITMAN director Xavier Gens, and Romero’s DIARY OF THE DEAD. I guess Canada CAN be useful!
