Oh HELLRAISER remake… how you tease us, or make us despise thee. I’ve made it no secret that I’m not a huge fan of the first HELLRAISER film, simply because I’m actually a big Pinhead fan. Yeah yeah, I know the first novel and therefore the entire franchise was never meant to center on that delicious cenobite… but you can’t argue with succ… err relative success. Sure the last few Pinhead adventures have gone straight to DVD… maybe that’s why we’ve got a remake on the way.
Sorry. Reboot. The man helming the upcoming HELLRAISER film, Pascal Laugier, recently spoke to filmsactu about his upcoming feature. The talented director set the records straight that this film will not be a remake but is actually a reboot. Well if FRIDAY THE 13TH and HALLOWEEN are any indication, the word ‘reboot’ means success.. although HALLOWEEN proved it doesn’t necessarily mean the film will be great.
The fellas over at Dark Horizons were kind enough to do a little translating on Laugier’s filmsactu interview (it’s in French). Here’s what they figured out: As mentioned, the film will be a ‘reboot’ not a ‘remake.’ It’ll take elements from the first HELLRAISER film as well as Clive Barker’s novel THE HELLBOUND HEART, which the film was based off of. Both Frank and Julia will be present and therefore a big part of the story I’m sure. The first draft of the script is finished, albeit in French. So it’s in the process of being translated into English. Laugier also mentioned how he turned down the chance to direct THE STRANGERS 2 and that he’ll next be working on the script for DETAILS, the adaptation of China Mieville’s short story he’s working on for Paramount Vantage.
So there you have it. What’s your take? Reboot… remake… does it matter at this point? I wonder if Laugier’s film will eventually spawn a slew of cheesy sequels like the original film did? Only time will tell. Of course we’ll be keeping you updated on anything and everything HELLRAISER as we hear it, so keep it here for updates.
