Let’s Be Cops is like a reverse 21 Jump Street in this red band trailer

Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. are hilarious on the small screen sitcom NEW GIRL and are now making the jump together for the feature film LET’S BE COPS. The red band trailer recently premiered online and it is pretty damn hilarious.

In a plot that could be described as a reverse take on 21 JUMP STREET, Wayans Jr. and Johnson play slacker buddies who get mistaken for police officers and chaos ensues. While the plotline may sound somewhat cliche, it actually looks like it thrives on the chemistry between the two leads while also not shying away from it’s R-rating. This red band trailer hopefully doesn’t give away too many jokes, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party and become neighborhood sensations. But when these newly-minted “heroes” get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line.

Wayans Jr. has the comedic timing that his father had back in the day but also seems to be a little edgier, something long missing from those in the Wayans clan. Jake Johnson has appeared in several films in recent years, including SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED. In fact, Johnson will be reteaming with Colin Trevorrow for JURASSIC WORLD. In the meantime, it looks like we have a comedy to compete with 22 JUMP STREET this summer.

LET’S BE COPS also stars Andy García, Nina Dobrev, Rob Riggle, Keegan-Michael Key and James D’Arcy. It hits theaters on August 13, 2014.
