As far as I know, this is the first time we’ve covered a video game based on a horror movie. If anyone knows better, let me know.

Toronto-based Groove Games today announced its agreement with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group to publish a 1st-person shooter based on Universal Pictures and Atmosphere Entertainment MM’s’ recently released horror film, George A. Romero’s LAND OF THE DEAD.

The game sets players in the midst of a battle between the quickly-shrinking living population and the army of the dead. Gamers will learn of a fortified city, Fiddler’s Green, which is the last safe haven for the living. Once the player reaches the city, they’ll discover that the zombies aren’t the only monsters around. Developed by Brainbox Games (also based in Toronto), the game will use the Unreal Engine, and features gore-galore, an immersive storyline and key environments from the film. XBox gamers can also team up with others and take on the zombie hordes online with XBox Live. Gamers will be armed to the teech with baseball bats, M-16s, revolvers and even shovels.

Jon Walsh, CEO of Groove Games, had this to say about the game: “George A. Romero’s LAND OF THE DEAD is a new classic in the zombie film genre and Groove Games is excited to bring games based on the film to the PC and Xbox. The game features intense action that horror fans will love, and the ability to play head to head against other players in zombie-infested levels is an absolute blast.”

Wow, it’s about damn time we got a survival-horror game based in Romero’s world of living dead. All I can say is, “Resident What?”. We’ll keep you posted as more information appears. Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler’s Green lumbers onto shelves October 18, 2005.
