Chances are you went to go see Luc Besson‘s LUCY this past weekend judging from the almost $50 million in box office for the sleeper hit. The fun and bizarre trailers for the science fiction/action movie may not have prepared audiences for the type of movie they were about to see but director Besson knew what films he was drawing influence from to make the Scarlett Johannson action flick.

The Film Stage tweeted one of the first pages to Besson’s screenplay for LUCY which gave the director’s breakdown on how to explain LUCY to the general movie-going audiences.

LEON: THE PROFESSIONAL, INCEPTION, and 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY are three excellent films, one of which Besson himself directed. THE PROFESSIONAL accounts for the action sequences in LUCY while INCEPTION could represent the complex interconnected nature of the narrative while 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY would be the more ethereal and spiritual side of the film’s third act. This is certainly an odd trio of films but a justified one if you have seen the movie.

There are not many movies as odd as LUCY out there but there are also just as few that are as much fun. Check it out if you haven’t already. LUCY is now playing.
